Madeline "Maddy" Schaar

Her Story

Maddy grew up in Victoria, Texas, the daughter of Bobby and Maggie Schaar and a beloved sister to Katherine and Thomas. From an early age she had a gift for connecting with animals, a passion nurtured during summers on her Uncle Joe's ranch and through her work at Main Street Animal Hospital alongside Dr. Jody Norris in Caldwell. Her love of animals was nurtured early on by her uncle Dr. Travis Schaar and his daughter Dr. Mallory Schaar, both veterinarians in Victoria, whose family practice gave Maddy her first real exposure to veterinary medicine. She was endlessly proud of her hometown and her family of veterinarians, and loved telling anyone who would listen about the Schaar family practice back home.

She carried that love of animals to Texas A&M University, where she graduated in 2021 with a degree in Poultry Science — a program and an Aggie community she was incredibly proud of. A true horseman at heart, she carried her Western heritage with her everywhere, and later moved to Lexington, Kentucky, caring for Kentucky Derby horses at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital. Her path eventually brought her home to the Brazos Valley, where she worked at South 40 Veterinary Hospital with Dr. Ryan Lee, treating horses across the region she loved.

Maddy was tough, independent, and endlessly bright — the kind of person who brought light into every room and every life she touched. She was the truest kind of friend — the one who showed up and advocated for everyone lucky enough to call her a friend. She was every bit as proud of her own family, beaming whenever she talked about her Mom, her Dad, and her brother and sister. Though she was well traveled, her heart never left home; being a ranch kid and a family person was always at the center of who she was, and some of her favorite memories were the escapades she shared with her cousin Hannah. She is remembered by her family, her many friends, her godchild Lyra, her constant companion Guess, and her horse General.
